The aim of Foxconn is to craft a vertical dais including manufacturing, hardware, component manufacturing, and battery management

Foxconn, the Taiwan based contract manufacturer of the tech giant Apple’s iPhone is now willing to foray into the electric vehicle manufacturing ecosystem in India, according to some unnamed officials familiar with this matter. The anonymous spokesperson also added that in order to mee the same, Foxconn is already having various discussions with the state governments in the country.

Back on May 31, 2023 Foxcoon in its yearly report added that the government of India would assist them in beginning the production line towards the end of this year to offer two-wheeler EV manufacturing services, which would meet the demand of the EV market in Southeast Asia. This is the first time where Foxconn specifically highlighted its ambitions to boost its EV manufacturing cluster in the nation.

People familiar with this matter exclusively told ET that very soon an Indian bureaucrat is geared up to visit the island country and would hold meetings with the Foxconn bigwigs to discuss the company’s plan further. One of the sources told ET, “It is still unclear if Foxconn will do contract manufacturing for multiple brands or for a single brand through the JV (joint venture) route. They have a tie-up with Ather Energy (electric scooter maker) but it is likely that they will look for a partner when they come into space — possibly with one of the (Indian) auto giants — like they did for semiconductor.”

According to the ET report of the ET, Foxconn is aiming to become the Android of the EV industry. Last year, Foxconn officials met the senior officials of four states Maharashtra, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh to discuss in detail about the company’s EV manufacturing plans. Meanwhile, the company was looking forward to establishing its EV manufacturing base in Maharashtra. But, due to some impediments, the plan dropped and therefore, Tamil Nadu might have the opportunity because the company is already having a unit in the state.

Telangana could be another choice because the state is extremely active in terms of offering incentives and outreach. Chairman of Foxconn, Young Liu, visited India a year back, upon which, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that the Taiwanese company’s “push for EV manufacturing is in line with our commitment of Net Zero Emission”.
