STMicroelectronics has launched a new series of short-range wireless microcontrollers aimed at serving wearables and smart objects. These microcontrollers focus on making devices smaller, easier to use, and more cost-efficient, while also ensuring security. The main emphasis of this product line, known as STM32WBA5, is its ability to provide a single-chip solution that reduces device size, lowers material costs, and speeds up product development time. This is particularly beneficial for vendors aiming to swiftly introduce new products while adhering to budget constraints. Additionally, the STM32WBA5 is compatible with existing STM32 microcontroller development tools, simplifying the transition from wired to wireless designs. A notable feature of the leading STM32WBA55 microcontroller is its ability to simultaneously support multiple wireless standards like Bluetooth LE 5.4, Zigbee, Thread, and Matter. This ensures smooth connectivity with different smart devices and home controllers. Furthermore, its integration of support for Bluetooth LE Audio specifications enables the creation of innovative audio products.
Security is a key aspect of the STM32WBA series. It is the first wireless MCU to achieve SESIP Level 3 security certification, ensuring compliance with regulations like the US Cyber Trust Mark and the EU Radio Equipment Directive (RED). The technical specifications of the STM32WBA series include a 100 MHz Arm Cortex-M33 core, up to 1MB of flash memory, low power consumption, and an integrated 2.4 GHz radio with adjustable RF output power. These features enhance the efficiency and performance of the microcontrollers while also focusing on providing compact, cost-effective, and secure solutions for wearable and smart object applications.
