Melexis has expanded its portfolio of non-contact position sensors with the release of two new MLX90421 and MLX90422 magnetic position sensors. Specifically designed for automotive applications, these new sensors complement the existing MLX90364/5/6/7 sensors already in the company’s product line come with Triaxis high-accuracy magnetic sensing technology.
The key features of the MLX90421 magnetic sensor and MLX90422 magnetic sensor are similar to those of MLX90364/5/6/7 devices of course with the additional enhancements incorporated in each. These ICs come with high functional safety and electromagnetic compliance (EMC) characteristics. Besides, these ICs also support heightened temperature operation.
Additionally, these ICs feature built-in data conversion and digital signal processing along with programmable output stage driver. While the MLX90421 sensor IC provides a ratiometric analog or pulse width modulated (PWM) output, the MLX90422 sensor IC delivers a single edge nibble transmission (SENT) output according to SAE J2716.
The expansive -40°C to 160°C ambient temperature range of these devices makes them capable of being deployed within vehicles that lack the heat dissipation normally found in engine bays, such as hybrid and electric vehicles. These sensor ICs support ASIL-B level and adhere to ISO26262 functional safety guidelines via the safety element out of context (SEooC) approach. Other than the above-mentioned features, the improved absolute maximum ratings (AMR) such as output protection of -18V/34V and supply protection of -18V/37V reduces the risk of electrical overstress.
Cost-sensitive automotive applications including powertrain actuators, pedal positioning, fuel level gauges, and transmission systems, though also suitable for industrial implementations are sure to be benefitted from the release of these two new magnetic sensors ICs. Both MLX90421 and MLX90422 sensor ICs can be supplied with a single die in either a SOIC-8 package format or a PCB-less DMP-4. A fully redundant dual die TSSOP-16 package is also available for safety-critical situations requiring system redundancy.
